At the end of 2008, 2168 people applied for refugee status in South Korea : only cases 101 were approved. Moreover, 71 of them received humanitarian status. The number of people applying for asylum is on the rise, however, despite ratifying the 1992 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, Korea lacks specific policies and institutions for refugees.
Refugees reside on Korean soil, however they face hardships integrating and adjusting to a new society; many have difficulties making a living. Here, they live as stateless people or strangers and aliens to the Korean society. Their lives disclose the reality of the hardships refugees face in Korea. We hope that together with the Korean society, we can seek for a solution. |
